Town Square is hosting its 9th annual Go Green! Festival tomorrow, June 4 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at McCarren Park.

It’s the go-to place to learn about sustainability initiatives going on in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Attendees can also expect live music, food and drinks, too.

Last weekend, Greenpoint residents and civic leaders honored those who paid the ultimate sacrifice at the annual Memorial Day Parade along Manhattan Avenue.

The parade began in front of St. Stanislaus Memorial American Legion Post 1771. Parade-goers then marched to a mass at St. Anthony’s.

Representatives from the Greenpoint Monitor Museum, Knights of Columbus 293 and even some students joined the parade.

The Greenpoint Chamber of Commerce and Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG), a local advocacy group, are teaming up to host their 7th Clean Up Day at southwest Greenpoint.

Come out to Greenpoint Beer and Ale, located at 7 North 15th Street, on Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m. to meet your neighbors and work together to make Greenpoint a cleaner community.

Greenpoint is celebrating its veterans again this year with a parade for those who sacrificed for our country.

On Sunday, May 29, the Veterans Memorial Parade will pay tribute to locals who were part of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Gulf War and the War on Terror.

The event will begin at St. Stanislaus Memorial American Legion Post #1771, located at 519 Leonard Street, starting at 9 a.m. The parade then moves along Manhattan Avenue to St. Anthony St. Alphonsus, about an eight-block walk. There, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated.

After the mass, the parade starts up again and ends back at the American Legion Post.

Tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church, located at 263 Marcy Avenue in South Williamsburg, the Department of Transportation (DOT) is hosting a Vision Zero Town Hall.

The meeting is hosted by Council members Antonio Reynoso and Stephen Levin, along with the Southside Community Mission.

At the town hall, residents will be able to tell city and elected officials how to make streets safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and all users of the road.

The meeting will begin with a presentation from DOT, followed by a Q&A session with DOT and members of the NYPD.

Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG) is hosting a Greenpoint Development Meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Polish & Slavic Center, located at 176 Java Street, to update the community on a slew of projects.

Attendees will hear from Councilman Stephen Levin, the state Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), the city Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) and representatives from the following projects: West Street project, Greenpoint Landing and the NuHart State Superfund.

NAG will be providing updates about the upcoming public comment process for the NuHart State Superfund site, which has now reached the Feasibility Study (FS) stage of the Superfund process. The FS is currently under review by state officials.

Radoslaw Suchowolak, a real estate investment manager at Investors Bank, has been elected to the Board of Managers of the Greenpoint YMCA. According to the board’s president, Paul Pullo, Suchowolak joined on May 10.

The Greenpoint Y will introduce Suchowolak to the entire board at their next meeting on Wednesday, May 25.

Suchowolak has worked as a volunteer at soup kitchens, Outreach and walks and brings opportunities for grants and scholarships to YMCA activities.

“Rad will indeed be a fine addition to our board,” said Kendall Charter, executive director of the Greenpoint YMCA. “We are excited to have him on board.”

Suchowolak joins the rest of the board, which now include: Paul Pullo, Gina Argento, Frank Carbone, Roseanne Antonucci, Peter Cruz, La-Asia Hundley, Michael Kawochka, Megan King, Stuart Leffler, Michael McKenna, Rama Mukhopadhyay, Alexander Ore, Dr. Charles Ptak, Christina Pullo, Walter Sanchez, Craig Shillitto, Miriam Sy-Gorski, Heidi Shea Springer and Scott Stedman.

Located at 733 Manhattan Avenue, off Lorimer Street, Greenpoint Vision Care has been serving the neighborhood for 30 years.

With a lab in the store, eye exams are a snap. The people at Vision Care can get you in and out fairly quickly.

They do contact lens fittings, DMV tests and even treating eye infections on premises. Vision Care offers designer glasses, too.

Dr. Sebastian Polizzi leads the group, and the doctors at the center offer great service for your entire family.

Greenpoint Vision Care is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

One of the biggest issues in Greenpoint and North Brooklyn is what locals call Bushwick Inlet Park, located on Franklin Avenue near N14th Street. It’s a 28-acre stretch of land on that the Greenpoint waterfront that was a negotiated deal between the community and the City of New York.

The negotiation came at a time when then-Mayor Michael Michael Bloomberg had thought the city would get the Olympics, therefore needing this area to host some events.

A decade later, there is no park.

Although the protests have been on the down low since late last summer, the issue will soon be heating up. It continues to be a defining issue among Greenpoint residents.

 

The North Brooklyn Boat Club kicked off the boating season with its Opening Day on Saturday afternoon.

The community event featured free public paddles, music, a bar & grill and other activities. Community members learned about the programs and what a membership with the boat club entails.

Guests also enjoyed the music of troubadour Morgan O’Kane, who dropped in by boat and kicked off his Sailing the Hudson tour.
