McCarren Park to add three new BBQ areas

Now that the warm weather is (finally) here, we’ve got some good news for barbecue fans.

NYC Parks has announced that three new barbecue areas have been created at McCarren Park. Park users will now see nine double-headed grills, 18 picnic tables and three large charcoal bins in three locations near Vincent Abate Playground.

The new barbecues, tables and bins were installed over the last two weeks, and have already been put to good use.

Last year, 2,059 special events permits were issued by Brooklyn Parks between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Any event involving more than 20 people requires a special events permit.

Parks also sent a reminder for barbecuers to pick up after themselves and their litter as they enjoy the space.

Go Green! Brooklyn Festival set for June 2

Town Square’s annual Go Green! Brooklyn Festival is set for Saturday, June 2 from noon to  p.m. at McCarren Park.

The fair will have all sorts of fun events and activities, including the Greencycle swap, local food, arts and crafts, health/wellness classes and musical and dance performances.

It will also serve as an open air gallery with Greenpoint Open Studios.

To exhibit at the festival, apply here.

Please note: the first day of the clinic is free. To participate in the clinic after the first day, you’ll need a Recreation Center Membership.

TONIGHT: Drink with Pride in Greenpoint

Enjoy the final single-bar event of the season at the very hip Threes at Franklin + Kent at 113 Franklin St and be treated to live music. At 9pm Lo Watts will be performing classic Jamaican tunes!

Threes at Franklin + Kent is proud to promote some fantastic LGBTQIA+ Brooklyn businesses and spread the word about Brooklyn Pride.

USPS Parking Request Concerns Residents

North Brooklyn residents are concerned that a United States Postal Service request to park USPS vehicles on Marcy Avenue will take much-needed parking away from the community.

A USPS representative explained at a Community Board 1 meeting on April 10 that while its office on South 4th Street has 30 vehicles, it only has space to accommodate 10. USPS hopes to partner with the Department of Transportation to create space for the trucks along Marcy Avenue in an effort to solve this problem.

The plan will be presented to the Community Board 1 Transportation Committee for further discussion at a meeting on May 14.

Greencycle Spring Cleaning Swap this weekend

Have any spare clothes that are just taking up closet space?

Stop by Town Square’s Greencycle “Spring Cleaning” swap on Saturday, April 14 at Leonard Library.

Donate some of your *gently used* clothes, shoes, books, toys, bikes, phones or other household items.

You can also walk away with a bag-full of donated items as well.

All remaining items will be donated to Home Life Services homeless shelters.

Take a walking tour of the entire Newtown Creek

Have you ever been curious what the Newtown Creek looks, smells and feels like from both ends?

Here’s your opportunity. The Newtown Creek Alliance is hosting its second annual walking tour of the entire creek on Sunday, April 15.

The tour will go from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., spanning two boroughs and multiple neighborhoods. It will begin in Long Island City and end in Greenpoint, but also pass by Blissville, Maspeth, Ridgewood, East Williamsburg and Bushwick.

Learn about the history of the creek, including how a giant oil spill and manufacturing polluted the waterbody.

Your guides on this tour will be Mitch Waxman and Willis Elkins from NCA.

There will be a bathroom and food break along the way. Last year, the tour stopped at Goodfellas Diner in Maspeth.

Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable, sturdy and toed shoes, as well as hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a water bottle for good measure.
