Dimitris Petridis opened up the first Gyro World in 2005 on Northern Boulevard and 195th Street in Flushing, and later expanded to multiple locations in Queens with the help of his two sons, Konstantinos, also known as Kosta, and Thanasi.
Petridis is from Serres, a city in Northern Greece, where the family used to visit every year. From their frequent trips, Petridis and his sons decided that they want to bring authentic Greek culture into Gyro World, not only pertaining to the freshness of food, but the atmosphere as well.
“People have the wrong perception of Greek service and restaurant industry,” Kosta said.
“It’s not just gyros and fast food service, it’s a whole atmosphere of music, bonding with friends and family, enjoying your surroundings, which is what we try to show the neighborhood,” he added. “My father took the gyro game to another level and we abide to our slogan, ‘a modern Greek eatery.’”
Although the Petridis’ haven’t been to Greece as a family unit in the last couple of years, it hasn’t hindered on their relationships with one another.
“The restaurant industry keeps us all very busy, but we are all in it together,” Thanasi explained. “We at least get to see each other and we have each other’s back no matter what.”
The elder Petridis worked in the food cart business for over a decade in Manhattan before he decided to open Gyro World. With years of experience, it wasn’t a surprise that his store was nothing short of successful.
After only four years they enlarged the original Gyro World Flushing by purchasing the space next door, which more than doubled their seating.
The Flushing location received customers from all over the Tri-State area, with patrons coming from places like Astoria, Bronx, Jersey and Staten Island. As time went on, and the Petridis’ sons got deeper involved into the business aspect, they decided to continue developing Gyro World.
In 2014, the Ridgewood location opened up and Petridis celebrated the grand opening of their Astoria location this past April.
Opening more locations made it more convenient for their loyalists as well as brought in new customers.
The Petridis brothers did not always know that they would follow the footsteps of their father. While in school, Kosta dabbled among many other subjects including architect, music production and construction. When he decided that he wanted to continue with his role at Gyro World, he never second-guessed himself.
“You don’t wanna be in the restaurant industry because you grew into it, you want to do it because you love it,” Kosta said. “I’ve thought about it since high school, but when I made my choice, I did it with a lot of confidence.
“My father made us who we are today, and we take it and accept it,” he added. “He gave us a foundation and we’re building on it, and all three of us are learning together.”
Petridis has lots of confidence in his sons as well, and trusts them with having big responsibility in the company.
“With my sons being involved, I have made partners out of them. Anyone with partners will tell you there are many pros and cons, so it definitely takes some getting used to, but I’m very proud of both my son’s because they are extremely responsible and mature,” said Petridis.
The three-month-old Gyro World on 30th Avenue is taking its next step and opening up outdoor seating for some sun and souvlaki.
The father and sons business is continuing to look for ways to expand and develop Gyro World into a bigger company, and hopefully planning a family outing to Greece.
