The pre-kindergarten to 5th grade elementary school has been observing the historic benchmark with themed celebrations, including Historic Photo Day last week. Classes of students posed for group photos with a cutout of a class photo taken 120 years ago.
“It was fun to pair the students with this historical document from so long ago,” said Leslie Cooper, co-chair of the 120th anniversary team.
In the week leading up to the festivities, students were asked to look at the photo and compare the similarities and differences with children today. They discussed facial expressions, clothes and even the moods of the children.
The celebration served as a learning opportunity for students to talk about how times have changed. They spoke about how the lessons students learned back then and what they learn now are different.
“It was a great learning exercise for the students on history, time and perspective,” Cooper said.
For the last several months, community members also took part in celebration events, including a wine and cheese anniversary kickoff, a toy drive in December and a community service day at McGolrick Park.
In honor of the anniversary, the PTA also created the first ever P.S. 110 Scholarship and a legacy book that contains archival information and photos.
Anna Cano Amato, the school’s principal for more than 30 years, started as a classroom teacher. She said it has been a privilege to serve the school community for the last three decades.
“I have witnessed our 100th, 110th and now our 120th anniversary,” Amato said. “With each passing year, we have only grown stronger in our mission.”
