Where's the flag?

Dear Editor,

The sky was a little overcast, but the weather held up for the beginning of this year’s Maspeth Memorial Day Parade.

Toward the end there were a few sprinkles, but that did not seem to dampen the spirits of those marching.

This year, once again, it was very touching to see all of the American flags on the overpass on Grand Avenue, along with the American flags flying from the lamp posts.

In past parades, you either had the mounted horses with their riders escorting the American flag or a color guard with our American flag leading the parade. But this is the second year in a row with no American flag leading the parade!

If this year’s slogan was “Maspeth Stands & Salutes Old Glory,” why wasn’t the group carrying the 45-star flag from 1895 leading the parade or the elderly gentleman marching all by himsel, proudly waving his smaller flag?

Either one could have had the honor of leading.

Maybe the committee in charge of planning next year’s parade, should be sure that our flag take first priority!

Sincerely,

Bernice Lancucki

Maspeth
