It might be a good thing the fences were shortened at Citi Field, otherwise the Home Run Derby contest in 2013 might have been a little boring.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig visited City Hall on Wednesday to announce that the 2013 All-Star Game will be played in Flushing.

“As we celebrate the franchise’s golden anniversary this year,” said Selig, referring to the New York Mets 50th anniversary, “I am pleased to award the 2013 All-Star Game to the New York Mets and their loyal fans.”

Shea Stadium and the Mets hosted the 1964 All-Star Game, which featured 21 Hall of Famers, including Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, and Frank Robinson, but this will be the first one at Citi Field.

It will also be the first time the Mets host the game since CEO and owner Fred Wilpon and partners bought the team 33 years ago, but the 9th time that the Midsummer Classic has been played in New York City – the most of any city with a Major League team.

“It’s a great honor for everyone at the Mets to host the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field,” said Wilpon.

When asked if the decision to host the game at Citi Field had anything to do with the very-publicized financial troubles of the New York Mets, Selig said it had more to do with the new ballpark and the National League’s turn to host the game.

The game is scheduled to be played on Tuesday, July 16, but will be the culmination of five-day event that will begin on the previous Thursday.

A study by the city’s Economic Development Corporation estimates that the game will generate $191.5 million in total economic impact and draw nearly 180,000 visitors to the city.

“Next year’s All-Star Game is going to demonstrate once again that there’s no place like New York for world-class sporting events,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
