The Northside Market, a seasonal pop-up craft market, will open its doors on Saturday, June 25, adding to the growing list of places to dish out some dough along the strip.
The market will open every Saturday and Sunday during the summer from June until August.
The idea of broker Alex Sussman and craft market/festival expert and old college friend Justin Look, the market will offer an array of food, craft, art and “all that good stuff.”
A mix of 35 vendors – many local and some stable, some rotating – will be on hand at 135 Kent Avenue, in a unit that used to be the former sales offices of Edge condos, to showcase their unique, oft-handmade goods.
“It varies incredibly, there is no one thing that everyone has here and that’s how we try to make it,” Sussman said. “We want to have a lot of interesting things that keep people coming back.”
One such example is the Kogeto company, who will demonstrate the first panoramic iPhone videocamera at the market.
Although the Northside Market is in close proximity to other flea markets, like Artists and Fleas and Brooklyn Flea on the waterfront, Sussman noted that he does not want competition.
“We don’t really see our market as competing," he said. "We’re differentiating ourselves.”
The Northside Market will only sell handmade, new items and not the typical vintage and collectables you’d find in a typical flea market.
In addition, the market will feature live bands and DJs every weekend. A jazz band, a bluegrass band, and a DJ is already set to entertain patrons on opening weekend.
For residents, the market is one more addition to the bohemian, Billyburg vibe. For vendors, some of whom do not have an establishment, it’s a chance try their hand at selling and receiving feedback. “It’s also a good way to start getting into the neighborhood,” Sussman said.
Sussman is also lending space to local artists at the back of the market where rotating artists will feature their work on a weekly or biweekly basis.
“I would say – if you come out here you’ll find great food, great vendors and great products you won’t see anywhere else,” he said.
Northside Market is located at 135 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11211. For more information, call 917-397-0950 or visit their website.
