Atlas Park was mismanaged, not too expensive

I am encouraged by the statements of the new owners of Atlas Park that they will consult with the tenants and shoppers at the mall in order to determine its future course. Local residents have tried to support the mall since its inception, but due to a variety of factors, the Shoppes at Atlas Park never reached the critical mass of stores to generate sufficient foot traffic to support the retailers that were there.

What I find irksome is criticism that the mall’s struggles were due to “poor demographic fit” or because the stores were “too upscale” for the area. This is simply not true. The Shoppes at Atlas Park never contained an overabundance of luxury retailers that would not or could not be shopped at by local residents. Too often have the local demographics been cited rather than poor management, poor marketing and bad timing.

The residents of the surrounding communities may not be rich, but they certainly have enough discretionary income to spend money in various retail locations such as Queens Center and Roosevelt Field. They are educated consumers that know a good deal when they see one and when it’s not worth paying for parking to visit a single retail store.

We don’t need a Miracle Mile in Glendale, but at the same time we do not need more dollar stores and fast food restaurants. What we do need is a concerned and involved management team that consults with the tenants, customers and residents of the surrounding communities.
