Soaring temperatures are bringing people out of their homes and to the newly renovated McCarren Pool on Lorimer Street in Brooklyn. With a high of 100 degrees, approximately 1,200 people made it out to the pool on Saturday, according to a staff member. That was just 300 people short of the pool’s total capacity of 1,500.

The pool was commissioned by Robert Moses and opened in 1936 as a recreational service during the Great Depression. Closed for decades and reopened on June 28, ongoing renovations have made the facility a fun and calming location for those suffering from the summer swelter.

Doron Markus, Julia Alemany and their 3-year-old son, Noah, of Greenpoint, came to the pool to get away from the heat. “Before the pool opened, we played in the sprinklers outside the pool to stay cool,” Alemany said.

Now regulars at the pool, Markus said their son is learning to swim. “He’s practicing a lot and he loves to come,” he said.

Others also came to cool off at the pool, but for different reasons. College freshmen Ariel Sanchez of Borough of Manhattan Community College and Christian Feliciano of John Jay College of Criminal Justice came to socialize. “This is a great chance to see our friends,” Feliciano said. “It’s really a community experience.”

Both students said they have been coming to the pool since it opened. Before that, they went to Brighton Beach to keep cool.

Recent local Adina Roxona Breda visited the pool for the first time. “I just moved here and it’s two blocks away from my house,” Breda said. Though Breda said she prefers a dip in the ocean to the pool, she said she hoped for a relaxing experience before work at 4 p.m.

The pool is open until Labor Day, September 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
